Matthew P. Malcolm, Ph.D., OTR
Assistant Professor
Dr. Matt Malcolm is an assistant professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at CSU. He has 10 years of clinical and research experience in the areas of neurorehabilitation and neuroscience/ neurophysiology. Matt directs the NeuroRehabilitation Research Laboratory (NRRL) at CSU and is also a faculty affiliate at the Center on Aging. He received his BS in OT at the University of Buffalo and his PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Florida. Matt joined the CSU Occupational Therapy Department in 2003.
The focus of Dr. Malcolm's research is to investigate new therapies designed to assist individuals with neurologic damage in regaining skilled movement. Current studies in the NRRL employ intensive therapy programs and also rhythm-based treatments to encourage recovery of functional movement. An additional area of Matt's research seeks to understand some of the underlying processes of recovery. By using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), he is able to study how the organization and excitability of the brain changes during typical learning of motor skills and during recovery from stroke.
Matt has published his research in several journals including the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Clinical Neurophysiology, Physical and Occupational Therapy in Geriatrics, the Journal of Hand Therapy and the Journal of Physical Therapy. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development. Matt has received grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Veteran's Administration Division of Rehabilitation Research and Development, and Colorado State University to carry out his research.
During Fall semesters, Matt teaches Evidence-Based Research Practice with 2nd year OT students. In the Spring semester, he teaches OT and Theory with 1st year students, and Biomechanical Interventions II with 2nd year OT students. Matt also mentors students pursuing graduate degrees both within and outside of the OT Department. His #1 teaching goal is to encourage students to "own" their education.
When away from CSU, Matt enjoys the great outdoors of Colorado, his awesome wife April, and two crazy dogs Pete and Oscar.
