Karen Spencer, Ph.D., OTR
Associate Professor and Interim Department Head
Karen's research and practice focus is on occupational therapy in schools including the transition process for young adults moving from school to life. She values her on-going collaboration with school-based OTs and special and general education teachers who work in the community. With schools as the largest area of OT practice, Karen is dedicated to the preparation of OT graduate students who want to work in this setting. She also enjoys collaborating with and supporting community OTs who seek to improve school-based OT services.
Karen teaches OT courses focused on school based practice, consultation, and occupational therapy administration and leadership. She advises graduate students completing evidence-based practice projects. Karen has published more than twenty articles and book chapters. She has served in leadership roles within the Department, the Occupational Therapy Association of Colorado (OTAC), and the American Occupational Therapy Association. During her non-work hours Karen enjoys spending time with her family and friends, is active in the community, and participates in a variety of outdoor activities.
